Individualised Patient-Reported Outcome Measures

Standardised PROMs are fixed calibrated measures used to measure a change in patients experience of living with a long-term condition and the intervention they receive for it. Strong evidence from the field of psychology, sociology and narrative suggests that living with a long-term condition changes people’s perspectives and transform their understanding of the meaning of Quality of Life with impact on clinical outcomes and illness management. However, Standardised PROMs are vulnerable to these internal changes that happen in patients over the course of a long-term condition. The aim of the workshop is to demonstrate the need for Individualised Outcome Measures and qualitative approaches to examine the change process over time when applying Standardised PROMs.

This course will benefit anyone with an interest in Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs); especially those who seek to measure meaningful overtime changes in patients. A basic knowledge of PROMs would be beneficial for attending the course.

By the end of this programme participants will have an understanding of:

  • The individualised outcome measures and their underpinning theories using the Patient-Generated Index (PGI) as an example
  • The concept of change over time
  • Coping and adaptation mechanisms
  • Transformative learning and change of perspectives
  • Narrative and redefinition of life experiences
  • The application of the PGI in examining Quality of Life

They will be able to:

  • Design studies using the PGI
  • Collect and analyse data using the PGI
